Psalm 40:2...

Psalm 40 is a favorite of mine.
I love the fact that God reaches down and pulls us out of the pits we find ourselves in.
He sets us on solid ground and helps us to get our feet back securely underneath us.

In Beth Moore's book, Get Out of that Pit, she lists three ways we can find ourselves in a pit.
We can get thrown in.
Tragedy, betrayal, all manner of troubles in our circumstances or relationships can propel us into a pit.
We can slip in.
We didn't intend to fall into a pit, but we found ourselves in one regardless.
Maybe we just wandered off the path God meant for us to stay on,
we got a bit careless,
we harbored a few things in our heart that we shouldn't have.
We can jump into a pit.
We knew it was wrong, but we did it anyway and now we're stuck in a pit of our own making.

A study on the word "drew" indicates that the word means to fetch, to lift, to carry.
God sees us in our pit, hears our cries for help, and runs to fetch us and carry us out of the pit,
even out of the pit we dug by our own foolishness.
Isn't that amazing?

If you're in a pit, no matter how you got into it,
cry out to God,
lift up your arms,
and ask Him to fetch you and lift you right on out.
He wants to set your feet back on the Solid Rock.

  1. Our group on Sunday morning has been studying this very verse, among others.
My blessings are too numerous to count. This week, I was flung abruptly into the Pit and last night was spent in prayer, tears and grief. My Pit is emotional and spiritual because of someone I love having placed themselves in a spiritual and legal pit. Yours is the first blog I read and God used you to remind me of this wonderful comfort. I am hurting now over something I cannot control, my counsel has been violently rejected, and my heart cries out. He hears me. Thank you, sweet friend.

  6. This book is so special to me because it is the first one I read as a new Christian. I walked into a Christian bookstore and asked God to find me a book - Beth's book is what He came up with. She's awesome.

  10. Good thinking, good writing, good sharing, good teaching. Dun good, as usual. AND I'm an ocean person, too, of course... and lived in the pit for toooo long. I avoid it now, but, as I've said, God is BIGGER! All we can ever count on. Thank you.
