One of my favorite musicians is Don Potter.
On his album, I Live Here, is a song called What Seems Right.
I added the link to iTunes on the title below,
but you can also listen to it on your favorite music player, such as Spotify.
I love the message of the song.
We never outlive our usefulness in God's kingdom!
As long as you have breath, God has a purpose for your life.
WHAT SEEMS RIGHT by Don Potter
An unsuccessful night of surfing the net
I took a walk outside to see what I usually miss
The old man next door was staring at me through his fence
He motioned I come closer
Reluctantly I went
"Let me tell you a story 'bout a broken down horse
I found mostly dead
So I took him home of course
Was a beast of burden
He labored all his days
Outlived his usefulness
Not worth a bale of hay
It became too much too feed a dying breed
When a tractor and a plow would be all you'd ever need
Still I saw some worth", the old man said to me
As he tried to explain one of God's mysteries
What seems right to a man leads to death in the end
What seems too old for use
God will use again
What seems useless on earth, may in truth be God sent
What would it take to get your life back again
What would you pay to get your life back again
As he told this story
A young boy went riding by
On a wild and crazy horse with fire in his eyes
The old man said,
"Someone left that boy behind
Thought I'd take him home and give him another try
He was living alone behind the Exit Inn
And he didn't say where he came from and I didn't ask again
He and that horse have become the best of friends
As they ride through this valley, they're as free as the wind"
What seems right to a man leads to death in the end
What seems too old for use
God will use again
What seems useless on earth, may in truth be God sent
What would it take to get your life back again
What would you pay to get your life back again
Stunned by this story
I made my first reply
"You should retire, start living the easy life
Maybe get a home in Florida and lay back in the sun
Take a well deserved rest from the good works that you've done"
He said, "I am that old horse that's just outlived its time.
I am that young boy that someone left behind
And the Lord picked me up and gave me back my life
Now I save myself when I rescue those I find."
What seems right to a man leads to death in the end
What seems too old for use
God will use again
What seems useless on earth, may in truth be God sent
What would it take to get your life back again
What would you pay to get your life back again
still following,
That's beautiful. It is particularly so to me right now for a variety of reasons.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, you are so gifted and full of purpose. People are drawn to your personality from what I observe in the blog world. I pray for you to be clearly led by God and deeply encouraged.
DeleteI will try to remember the essence of this song to share with my mother. She is 80 and is sometimes lonely and asks why the Lord does not bring her home now. I always tell her that God has a purpose for her and that he still needs her here on earth. The image of the old horse will help me to remember. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOh, Donna, I pray that your mama is blessed and filled with a new since of purpose as you share these simple truths.
DeleteDear Elizabeth. Thank you. I downloaded the song on my Spotify. Good words to ponder on. God Bless You!
ReplyDeleteCarol, I hope you love Don's music as much as I do!
DeleteSuch truth! That's what I loved about my chaplain ministry to the elderly. There is value and worth - no matter our age. Yes, I have felt this at times as my life changes and the ministries I once had are just memories. But God always remind me that HE planned the day I would be born - and HE will use me. No matter how old I get.
ReplyDeleteYes and amen! The best is yet to be, right?
