Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home...

"Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home."
John Howard Payne

It's fun to travel, to get away, to see and experience new places.
But when all is said and done,  I'm always happy to come back home.

I don't think I've actually done any staged still life photography since our move to our new to us house.
It has fabulous light, much better than our former home.
I'm excited to try some staged still life in this light, and need to take the time to do so.

Meanwhile here are some unstaged photos shot at my home today.
One of my favorite things to do in the "bleak midwinter",
is to buy a few green living things for indoors.
A hyacinth to force bloom indoors is a favorite winter tradition.

Grocery store herbs are another inexpensive and fun thing to grow indoors,
and if all goes well, they can be transplanted outside in spring.

Who says herbs are a kitchen only plant?
Here's a cheery pot of oregano growing in my living room.

What about you, are you a fellow homebody?
What do you do to bring some cheer to your environment in the "bleak midwinter"?

  1. Oh my gosh, gorgeous shots Elizabeth! I LOVE that corner sink! Always wanted that! The light in your new home is perfect! Can't wait to see more. I have a number of green plants in my home and I take them outside in the summer. I haven't had much luck with growing herbs though.....sigh. You have some great light to do so!

    1. I would like to refinish our cabinets and get new countertops, but in the meanwhile, I do so love that corner sink!

  2. You DO have great light in your new home (something I will definitely look for if/when we move). I, too, am a homebody, but oddly it is the "sameness" of it that I seem to appreciate at this stage of my life. I'm not sure when that happened. I used to enjoy changing things up all the time! Hmmmmm.

    1. Rebecca, I wonder if I'll "outgrow" switching things around all of the time? :)

  5. Definitely a homebody! I also love to get out (especially if it's out for a hike), but I love being home. Like you, I bring in nature during the winter to brighten things up.

    1. Jill, I'm a mixture of homebody and needing to get out too. I think home is my recharge place.

  6. You have some great light in your new-to-you home! I hope we can find one with good light. It's a top priority after having much better light in this apartment than in our home in NC. Love the decor in your sink area!

    1. Yes, to good light. I think we fell in love with the openness and light when we were looking to buy.

  14. We recite that quote each time we return home from a long day. It's such a great reminder to appreciate what we have and to truly embrace the gift of a place to return to. Ive thought recently about indoor plans this season. You've inspired me to try herbs again.

    1. Yes, home sweet home for sure! As to growing the herbs, at just two or three dollars apiece, if they don't survive long term, they've certainly given me a couple bucks worth of pleasure in the meanwhile!

  17. I'm totally a fellow homebody... and I am missing my home. Although, I am so blessed to be living with my mil, I kind of miss my stuff. But, the fun thing is we have very similar taste so visiting here makes me feel at home.
