The national landmark, Huldah Klager lilac garden, is only about a twenty minute drive from my home. Last year I took my homeschooled seven year old granddaughter there for a field trip, and she loved it. She loved the history, the restored farmhouse, the beautiful garden and many varieties of lilacs, and, of course, the gift shop with one dollar grab bags for children.
This year I took all three of the youngest grandchildren, ages 8, 5 and almost 3. They all loved wandering through the garden, though touring the restored farmhouse with it's antiques wasn't ideal for the three year old, a rambunctious boy.

Not far from the garden is a lovely city park on a lake where my grandchildren enjoyed playing at the playground and splashing in the water at the lake. Indulging in ice cream cones at Dairy Queen before we headed home was a perfect way to end this beautiful spring afternoon together.
still following,
Lilacs are my second-favorite-scented blossom. Next to lily-of-the-valley... ♥
ReplyDeleteI adore lily of the valley and want to grow some!
DeleteVery pretty! Have you ever had lilac jelly? I was surprised to see a recipe on Facebook yesterday.
ReplyDeleteNo, but I did learn that the blossoms are edible. It would be fun to try it sometime!
DeleteLove Lilacs although I don't have any planted. Great photos of those and their wonderful color. Sounds like a fun day.

When we moved to our home two years ago, I was surprised to find out that the "trees" along my back fence and are all overgrown lilacs! We've trimmed them up and hope they bloom a bit better now.
DeleteSuch a beautiful color, I adore lilacs!!
ReplyDeleteMe, too!

Thank you, Molly!
DeleteThis post did my heart so good, Elizabeth! I miss the lilac trees we had around our farmhouse in Vermont [sigh] Thank you, friend!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you are a New England gal! I'm a native Oregonian, but Mama was born on PEI, but grew up in Maine, so I LOVE New England. I'm going to Maine with my three daughters for my 60th birthday.
DeleteThe do smell sweet although they mess with my allergies. - Love the 2 toned one. Your kiddos are adorable.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry your allergies prevent you from enjoying the lilacs! Thank you, I think my grands are pretty great, too!
DeleteThese are so pretty that I can just smell their sweet fragrance. I wish we had lilacs bloom where I live!
ReplyDeleteSharon, so glad you popped by! Lilacs are an old-fashion-y favorite of mine!
DeleteI missed the lilacs this year while we were in Arizona. Seeing your photos reminds me of the day you and I spent at the lilac gardens - a memory I love to recall.
