Oh my goodness! I used to be so faithful to post my gratitude list every Monday. Now it's often weeks in between postings. When I let this space become more quiet in order to devote more of my time and attention to what God was asking me to do in our church and in my "in real life" relationships, He took me up on it! But I also recognize that there is still time that I
waste that I could use to do more writing and posting.
In the past fourteen years I've counted and kept record of over 17,000 things for which I give God thanks. I've filled many little journals with each day's date and at least three God given blessings per day. I want to be sure that anyone who still pops by here to read my infrequent posts understands that I've lived through many highs, many lows and many ordinary in-between days in these fourteen years. The key is not to give God thanks whenever things are going good in life, but to notice God's goodness even on the worst of days. In the photo above I posted a verse from Habakkuk. The prophet, Habakkuk lived in a time of great moral decline in his nation and was facing an impending invasion and subsequent captivity by the Babylonian empire. It is in this context that he said this....
Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet, I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights. Habakkuk 3:17-19
We have a choice to make each day. Not just in how we spend our time, as I mentioned above, but also in our mindsets and the meditations of our heart. In Habakkuk's case, He made a choice of his will to rejoice in the Lord and to be joyful in God in spite of his dire circumstances. "I WILL rejoice in the Lord. I WILL be joyful in the God of my salvation."
Keeping a gratitude journal/list is one of the tools that helps me to remember that God is good and there is always something to be grateful for even on the hardest of days. I WILL give thanks. It's a choice.

Since 2009 I've been counting my blessings thanks to the prompting of Ann Voskamp.
I continue to count my thanks,
piling up gratitude day by day in my journal.
